Sax Zim Bog
Sax Zim Bog is a well-known location for serious birders located 50 minutes northwest of Duluth, Minnesota. Birders come from all over to find the Great Gray Owl, Black-backed Woodpecker, Boreal Chickadee, Canada Jay, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Connecticut Warbler, and many others.
The bog spans 300 square miles.
I was there from 1/20/25 to 1/24/25. That was during a cold spell, with temperatures as low as -30 degrees Fahrenheit, and windchills as low as -55 degrees Fahrenheit. I was outside for six hours on the coldest day, and I stayed comfortable in my many layers of clothing.
