My motivation for this photograph was purely visual at first. I spent time scouting locations to capture fireworks for the Gateway Arch 60th Anniversary Celebration, always drawn to the view of the Old Courthouse with the Gateway Arch rising behind it. On my previous visit to Saint Louis, construction blocked my shot, but this time, I found the perfect vantage point.
Initially, I didn’t consider the symbolism as I photographed the fireworks. It was only later, reviewing my images at home, that I realized the scene held deeper meaning. The photo I’ve titled “Gateway to Justice” is rich with symbolism: the Gateway Arch, the Old Courthouse, and the fireworks each tell a story.
The Gateway Arch was built as the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, commemorating the era of territorial growth under President Jefferson. Yet, its sweeping curve can also represent our nation’s ongoing journey—not just physical expansion, but moral and civic development as we strive to fulfill our founding ideals.
The Old Courthouse stands as a symbol of justice. It’s a place where justice was sought, sometimes won, and sometimes denied. The most famous case decided here, Dred Scott v. Sandford, is remembered as one of the greatest legal failures in American history. Dred and Harriet Scott initially won their freedom in 1850, but the decision was reversed by the Missouri Supreme Court in 1852, and the reversal was upheld by the US Supreme Court in 1857. It took the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments to the US Constitution to finally nullify the Dred Scott decision, abolishing slavery and granting citizenship to former slaves.
The bursts of fireworks above the courthouse dome symbolize, to me, a light of hope shining through a history that has not always lived up to our ideals. They celebrate the progress we’ve made toward Equality and Justice, even as they remind us of the work still to be done.
The title “Gateway to Justice” is more than a label—it’s an acknowledgment of our complex history and a hopeful path forward. The celebratory fireworks become a luminous commitment to our nation’s ongoing moral and civic growth, as we strive to fully realize the ideals of Equality, Justice, and Liberty.
